24 July 2025 (Danang, Vietnam): Leading up to International Primate Day on September 1, InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort, the five-star sanctuary hidden on the Son Tra Peninsula in Central Vietnam, has designated August as Primate Appreciation Month to reaffirm its commitment to conservation. It will be a month of fun and meaningful activities to educate, entertain and inspire all ages, while also giving guests the chance to make a real difference to the local population of critically endangered red-shanked douc langurs.
Primates are intelligent, social mammals that include monkeys, apes, and – us! Aside from humans, three primate species reside on the Son Tra Peninsula: the brown macaque, the nocturnal slow loris, and the “Queen of the Primates”, the red-shanked douc langur. There are an estimated 2,500 douc langurs remaining in the wild worldwide, of which approximately 1,000 live in the jungles of Son Tra. As the guardian of this pristine habitat, InterContinental Danang plays a key role in protecting this primate population.
Primate Appreciation Month features a series of themed experiences throughout August, spanning a wide range of guest experiences, from mindfulness to mixology, plus exciting kids’ activities to inspire the next generation of conservationists.
New Programming at the Green Hub, Monkey Yoga, and Cocktails
The resort’s Green Hub is a dedicated exhibition space where guests can learn about red-shanked douc langurs through engaging displays. During August, the venue will host regular talks and presentations by Mr. Trung Quân, the resident naturalist and former national park ranger, who will also ask guests to make a personal commitment to conservation. The resort’s yoga instructor has added some fun and exhilarating new moves so that wellness seekers can channel their inner simian and feel a spiritual connection with the forest, and a special primate-themed drinks menu at the resort’s L_o_n_g Bar offers “monkey cocktails” and banana splits using locally grown ingredients.
New Wildlife Expeditions and Monkey Bridge Repairs
The new Son Tra Wildlife Expedition (available twice a day through partner tour company Next Continent Travel) will invite travellers to head into the forest with wildlife experts and professional equipment to get a closer view of the animals and plants that make Son Tra so unique, including colourful birds, butterflies, and of course, douc langurs. This August, the resort team will also be busy upgrading the resort’s Monkey Bridges – a task undertaken every two years to maintain the network of five hand-woven bridges that let monkeys move freely through the jungle canopy and access their favourite feeding grounds.
Join Charles with a New M Club Tour and Wildlife Movies
Perched at the top of the resort, InterContinental Danang’s M Club is a vibrant entertainment lounge that is said to have been the residence of Charles, a well-heeled monkey whose influence can be discovered all around the resort. A new M Club Tour will uncover its whimsical interiors, including monkey-themed furniture, artworks, and even a banana-themed private movie theatre, creatively brought to life by the resort’s maverick architect and designer, Bill Bensley. Throughout Primate Appreciation Month, this quirky cinema will also screen nature films and documentaries for all ages.
Fun and Inspiring New Activities for Little Monkeys
Young explorers can take part in fun Scavenger Hunts, as they search the resort for red-shanked douc langur cuddly toys. If they find one, they can keep it and take it home! They can also enjoy a special kid’s Monkey Yoga class every Saturday.
“Here at InterContinental Danang, we feel a close connection with our treetop neighbours – including macaques, lorises, and of course, our cherished red-shanked douc langurs. Throughout Primate Appreciation Month, we are delighted to reveal immersive activities to raise awareness about the plight of the world’s primates and inspire the next generation of conservationists in fun and engaging ways. Together, we can make a real difference and help to halt the decline of these critical species, who are, after all, our closest relatives,” said Seif Hamdy, the resort’s General Manager.
