If you visit Central Vietnam, the UNESCO designated Imperial City of Hue is a must on your itinerary: it’s the former royal capital, with an actual “Imperial City” (a smaller version of that in Beijing), as well as ancient pagodas, gorgeously decorated royal tombs, and a beautiful river lined with lush gardens.
The best news, though, is a new way to get there. Previously you had to take a 3-hour highway trip from Danang; admittedly spectacular as one route takes you over the famous Hai Van Pass – but it was still a bit of a journey.
I recently took the new Heritage Train from Danang to Hue – and highly recommend it. Running twice a day in both directions, the service has comfortable seating, a nostalgic design, and a scenic train route along the coast, with expansive views of misty mountains, emerald seas, and secluded beaches that are hard to see by car. It’s another view of Vietnam I had not experienced.
The train features one car with live entertainment, a refreshment bar serving Vietnamese coffee and traditional snacks, and a souvenir shop. On my trip the car was full of a group of local women laughing and dancing – a true party on wheels!
The Concierge at InterContinental Danang can book your tickets and give you insider tips on what to see and do in Hue. This is a Danang to Hue experience not to be missed!
