A New Zoologist Joins InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort

InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort, honoured as the World’s Leading Green Resort at the 2018 World Travel Awards, welcomes new zoologist Anthony Barker to the team.

Anthony earned his degree in freshwater and marine biology from Aberystwyth University and was previously with Natural Resource Wales, the principal adviser to the Welsh government on the environment and protection of natural resources. He then worked with an organic farm in Australia, before coming to Danang to teach science.

He brings a comprehensive background in green consultation and marine conservation to the resort, which is committed to a variety of initiatives to protect the biodiversity of the Son Tra Nature Reserve. Located on the eponymous peninsula, the reserve is home to over a thousand species of flora and fauna, including the rare red-shanked douc langur.

These initiatives include the construction of bridges to help resident primates in crossing from one area of their forested habitat to another, and the donation of profits from the sale of specially commissioned douc langur plush toys to support scientific research conducted by partner organisations. Regularly scheduled wildlife walks, which Anthony now leads, educate guests about the many species that coexist peacefully within the resort.

Drawing on his experience in wildlife monitoring, Anthony looks forward to gathering extensive data on the douc population, which will enable him to provide fresh perspectives in his critical role at the resort.

“We are committed to fulfilling our role as stewards of the environment, and I believe we are uniquely situated to lead the sustainable development of eco-tourism in the region,” said Mr. Juan Losada, General Manager. “Having our new zoologist onboard is a mark of our continuing dedication to our corporate social responsibility programme.”
